Nintendo Direct 09.02.2022 | My Reaction

Hey lovelies! Happy March!! As you can tell from the title of today's post, I'm going to be sharing some of my thoughts on the most recent Nintendo Direct... almost a month after it aired. Better late than never, right?.... right?? I am so happy that getting a Nintendo Switch has revived my love for gaming after so many years. I mean, the nostalgic love hadn't disappeared, and I would often re-play some of PlayStation classics from my childhood, but some things that happened in my life put a dampener on gaming for a while, and I focused on my other hobbies much more. However, Animal Crossing: New Horizons ignited the spark again, and it's an awesome feeling to find myself getting hyped for new releases and updates like I used to as a teenager! So, even though I'm a few weeks behind, I still wanted to express my excitement with my fabulous readers, many of whom are likely to be game-enthusiasts themselves, and relive all that excitement again as I write :) I hope the same happens for you guys as you read along!

First, I'm going to be discussing the games I'm most looking forward to, the ones I audibly squeee'd in reaction to when they came up during the direct. Then I'll talk about some others that peaked my interest and I feel deserve honourable mentions. I'd love to hear all about which games you're most excited about, so please let me know in the comments.

I was absolutely over the moon when around twenty minutes into the Direct, a familiar pink round boi came running onto our screens! I had been keeping my fingers crossed for a Kirby game for a while, and oh my goodness, this trailer did not let me down! How brilliant does Kirby and the Forgotten Land look though!?

If you've been following my blog for a while and read the posts featuring the Kirby Ichiban Kuji lottery games I've played, then you will know how much I adore this Nintendo character. Although, I had a Nintendo DS in my early teens, I wasn't introduced to this cute little puffball until one of my friends in high school let me have a play of his Kirby game on the computers in the IT room at lunchtime, and I immediately fell in love with the character. I would get encouraged by my friends to imitate Kirby's moves in the game all the time because apparently I was hilarious, haha! And there's just lots of fun memories for me surrounding the franchise :)

The new game, which is scheduled to be released on March 25th, is so colourful and bright, and very much encapsulates the kawaii aesthetic, whilst presenting an action-packed and entertaining storyline. Aside from the overall appearance of the game, my absolute favourite feature has to be the 'Mouthful Mode' move and all its variations. I am particularly obsessed with Light-bulb Kirby, with Vending Machine Kirby coming in at a very close second. All of the artwork that I've seen around on twitter and instagram of Kirby-shaped random household objects and such has been fabulous! Which is your favourite of the Mouthful Modes? I cannot wait to play this beautiful and awesome-looking game!

If you watched the Nintendo Direct and weren't ecstatic about announcements involving the character in the above photo, we can't be friends...

I'm kidding :D BUT eeeeeeeeee!! Even though I went into the direct already knowing that there would be a Klonoa mention, I still couldn't contain my giddiness about it! You see, I couldn't watch the direct until the day after it was aired, and my friends who had watched it couldn't not immediately message me about Klonoa, because they know how much I adore the character/games. And then I noticed all of the artwork filling up my timeline on twitter and I pretty much almost cried. I am not even embarrassed by my reaction.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil is one of my all-time favourite games, and it forever will be! I have adored this bunny-esque character since I was around 8 years old after playing the first game, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on my PS1. During my childhood, I would experience a lot of games via demos, the kind that you could get in gaming magazines, as my parents couldn't afford to buy me new games all the time. I would play these demo versions of certain games again and again, and very much treasured every full-length game that I did have. The first Klonoa game blew little Sarah away with its cuteness, and also its theme music. Years later, I pestered my mom so much for the sequel, the exact game I still own now, and was overjoyed when she bought it for me!

Hearing the iconic 'WAHOO' sound not long after the Kirby announcement was almost too much to handle, I was just so happy, not only about the idea of a game but also the fanart that I know will come along with it as all the artists of the gaming community plays too. For the longest time, I have been sad about the lack of Klonoa merch available, and that will (hopefully) no longer be the case, especially after seeing all of the illustrations that popped up after the announcement! I now find it much more convenient to play games on a handheld console and barely ever play my Switch on the TV (living with chronic health conditions affects literally everything I can do nowadays!). This means that I have not played my PS2 version of the game for quite a while, so I am super thankful that the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series will bring Lunatea's Veil back into my life, as well as allow me to play the first game all the way through. Finally! Bring on July 8th!!

So, those two (technically three) game announcements are the ones that stole the show for me, but there were some others that I am tempted to check out. Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival looks so adorable that I am drawn to the game even though I don't think I'll be very good at playing it at all. I've never been particularly good at dancing games and anything similar that involves quick moves to the rhythm of music. Not gonna lie, I feel like the look of the game might mean that I spend my money on it but then don't actually play it, haha. Can any of you relate?

I am yet to watch the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (It's on my watchlist, with a million other shows, so I'll get around to it eventually!) but the game looked SO GOOD! The Hinokami Chronicles is due out on June 10th and I am feeling the urge to binge watch the show in the days leading up to the release and then have a play once I've completed it. We will see! Are you a fan of the anime and/or manga?

Another game that was memorable for me was the final announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The music and story in the trailer was beautiful, as well as that icy landscape featured, and what can I say? I'm a sucker for a humanoid character with animal ears! The creatures in this game also look epic, wouldn't you agree? This game is expected to launch some time in September this year.

The last game, only because of the order I've decided to write about them in, that caught my attention was the Kingdom Hearts collection, Integrum Masterpiece series. As someone who never got the chance to play these games when I was younger apart from one time at a friends house, and who only knows about the characters because of tumblr, I think it's wonderful that the option will be there for me to experience all three games on my Switch whenever I decide to. They are available now from the Nintendo e-shop, if you didn't already know :)

So, that's enough of my rambling for one day! I'm never sure if my game-related posts are interesting, so I'd really appreciate if you guys could let me know if you enjoyed reading :) I hope that I was able to bring some upcoming games to the attention of anyone who missed the Direct, or maybe someone who is new to the world of the Nintendo Switch and happens to stumble upon my post in their google search. Or that I was able to get everyone else excited all over again for these games! Either way, it looks like it's going to be an eventful year for gamers, even more so after the Pokemon Direct and the trailer for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. You'd have to be living under a rock to not have spotted the new starters on social media yet :D Do you have a favourite? They're all adorable, but I'm all about Sprigatito! Anyhow, this post is already super long, so I'll end it here.

Thank you for reading!

What game are you most hyped about?

Is there anything that you were hoping to see announcements about, but were left disappointed?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons | First Impressions

Hello everyone! Today is the one-year anniversary of the super cute Nintendo game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so I thought what better day than today to finally share my long-awaited first impressions review of the game! It's taken me so long to write about the fifth edition to the the Animal Crossing franchise, because playing it has gradually taken over my life, haha!! I'm late to the game and I'm sure as heck making up for it. Go hard or go home? Although, play hard and stay home seems more appropriate nowadays :D Anyhow, if you follow me over on social media, you will likely have seen that for Christmas, my sister got herself a Nintendo Switch, plus surprised me with the AC:NH game! And I am OBSESSED. For fellow fans of this absolutely adorable game, or those of you who have witnessed the hype and been unsure whether or not to join in, here are my opinions. I hope you all enjoy reading!

So, I currently don't have a Switch of my own and thus I've been playing AC:NH via my sister's game (after we discovered you could only have a one island per console! Cheeky Nintendo... gone are the days of buying shared consoles for your kids, I guess?), but yeah, this means that I'm not the 'resident representative' on the island and therefore don't get the 'perks' that come along with that. I have had a go at playing as my sister's islander though, so I know what you can do. I am currently saving for my own Nintendo Switch, and then I'll finally be ready to experience the interactive elements of New Horizons, such as visiting with friends. But my review is of the game options themselves and it doesn't really matter that my islander has not done any travelling yet.

A colourful showing showing a coral nintendo switch console, an animal crossing new horizons game, and two amiibo cards, an orange one with a frog character, and a pink one with a goat character

I'm rambling, as per, so let's get into my thoughts and feelings, likes and dislikes. It's worth noting that I am basing my opinions in comparison to the 'old school' Animal Crossing: Wild World game, that was released back in 2005. My first handheld console was a Nintendo DS lite, a pink one to be specific, and AC:WW was one of my first games, as well as Nintendogs. (Oh my gosh, Nintendo! Please make this happen for the Switch!!). I never played the previous edition, New Leaf, so apologies if I think something about New Horizons is fantastic, only for it to have also been a thing back in 2012. So, now that my disclaimer(?) is out of the way, what were my initial thoughts about AC:NH?

Upon creating my profile and islander, the first thoughts that popped into my head were 'wow! look how pretty this game is!! The graphics and general design is gorgeous and I want to live here!!'. I thought that the gameplay was so bright and shiny, and I was very impressed with my first experience playing on a Nintendo Switch. One of my favourite features of AC:NH as a whole is the nature. There is so so much attention to detail, and it has quickly become my happy place! Being a nature nerd but also living with several disabilities has had such an impact on me throughout the course of the pandemic, because a wedge has been driven between me and my in-real-life happy places. Even though, obviously a game is not a substitute for the actual world, it has been very nice to have the ability to see insects and flowers and trees each and every day in the palm of my hands, and in a way that is much more interactive than simply scrolling through photography on my phone. Damn though, every single natural element in AC:NH looks beautiful and I first started playing when everything was covered with snow... it really was a winter wonderland on our island :)

A photo showing an Animal Crossing New Horizons themed Nintendo Switch case, as well as an art piece showing an Animal Crossing character portrait

I'm totally going to use the photograph above as an opportunity to give a shout-out to the amazing artist, Lizzy aka Aries Arts. Just look at the incredibly gorgeous Animal Crossing portrait that they made for me when I won a giveaway over on their instagram!! You can read more in a post I shared all about it here. Honestly, I cannot thank Lizzy enough for creating this piece for me and I feel like every Animal Crossing fan needs one in their lives!

So back to my first opinions of AC:NH... I loved the variety of character design options we could have right away. This is probably something that was offered in the New Leaf game, but as I mentioned, I am comparing this to my experiences playing Wild World. I didn't realise the graphics were quite as different until I played New Horizons. It was great for the early 2000's but let's just say, I am so glad we have gotten this far with game development, haha! I also loved to discover that we still have many of the original villager cast of characters (and lots of newbies, for me anyway!). I missed these cuties so much!! Back when my sister & I played AC:WW, our favourite animal friend was always Chevre, the goat, and YAY!! She's still around :) My other personal favourites were Lily and Mint. I never see anyone online mentioning Mint T_T so I don't know if she's around nowadays. I am crossing my fingers that I can get hold of an Amiibo card for her... wish me luck!

The most amazing thing happened when I obtained my first Nook Miles ticket and boarded a Dodo Airlines flight to explore a new island. Lily was there!! What are the chances of that!? I was over the moon to say the least that I could invite her to move onto our islander and there's she's been since January 2021. Who are your favourite villagers/islanders?

a screenshot from Animal Crossing New Horizon of a character talking to frog called Lily. It is snowing and there are flowers and snow on the ground.

A screenshot of two Animal Crossing New Horizon characters, a human, a blue goat and a white goat, all wearing very cute dresses

Some other features that I was very happy to discover within my first week of gameplay were the fact that it's so easy to fish and the screenshot/photo-taking options! Back when I played on my Nintendo DS, I don't know why but I found it super difficult to fish and so I barely ever attempted to. It sucked because I was really curious about the species they'd included in the game, so I am delighted now that it is really simple to catch fish and I am very much loving how detailed the creatures are! I have set up a mini aquarium in my house because I just want to look at them all the time!! What are your favourite sea creatures on the game? I am yet to encounter sharks so I am super excited about that in the future :) I, of course, didn't have Harv's Island and his photo studio rooms at first, but I loved the filters you could use when taking screenshots and how you could zoom in, change the viewpoint, etc. Like, did you even play if you didn't take loads of cute pictures to share on social media?? :D Thank you Nintendo for giving me aesthetic choices!

I have to admit that I was mortified when I initially got playing and couldn't locate Blathers and his museum anywhere, because that side of Animal Crossing has always been my firm favourite and I refused to believe that they were gone, but I wanted so desperately to start adding specimens to the museum collection. When Blathers finally showed up, I was so relieved!! And I am actually a fan of having to build up the museum from scratch. And guys, WHAT A MUSEUM IT IS!! I could not believe my eyes when I first got to explore the magnificent creation and I am slightly bitter that my islander can't set up home in it :D

A screenshot from Animal Crossing New Horizons showing a happy character in front of a coral reef aquarium at the museum

A screenshot of gameplay in Animal Crossing New Horizons. A character with turquoise hair is smiling at a dinosaur fossil in the museum

I mean, how could I not fall in love with the AC:NH museum!?! The designers did a phenomenal job with it and every exhibit is so well thought out and intricate and it's been a joy to fill it with fossils and wildlife. The dinosaur bones are especially beautiful! Okay, I will be here all day talking about the museum, so onto my likes and dislikes after playing the game for around three months.

Features I really like in AC: New Horizons

That Resetti is no longer a thing! As an adult, I know better than to turn my consoles off before saving, but omg that character was the most annoying thing ever back when I was thirteen/fourteen years old! I love that you cannot fall into fossil holes anymore, because that was bloody annoying, too!! I am a big fan of the reactions, mostly for the screenshot potential but also because they are so damn cute!! And I love that the islanders will respond to you :) Another feature that I think is great is how easily you can stock up on so many Nook Mile points. At the moment though, I have too many than to know what to do with!

The festivals and special events, as well as the themed items, are such a wonderful edition to the gameplay. I am a sucker for celebrating things, especially those random commemoration days on the calendar, like National Popcorn Day. Who is in the same boat? So, you bet I am going to jump at every opportunity to celebrate special times on Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Furthermore, those Super Mario items added for the recent 25th Anniversary are so cute!! I can now run around the island, catching butterflies and collecting fossils, dressed as Princess Peach. What more could I want? And those little mushroom furniture items... I want one in my real bedroom! Speaking of furniture, the way you can decorate and customise your home and island is so much fun!! I can live out all of my aesthetic dreams in one place... kawaii in the home, grunge on the beach :D AC:NH has got me covered! I very much like being able to craft so many interesting items, from apple hats to giant mossy rocks. Tell me about your favourite item and/or item to craft in the comments :) I'm really curious!

Features I dislike in AC: New Horizons

I feel like dislike is too strong a word, to be honest :') I adore this game and there are only a few things that I wish could be different or hope that they update in the future or whatever. I wish that you could make a huge house, a mansion even, or anything that your imagination could think of. That you could design your home in a construction-like building feature. I have only been playing for three months and I have already expanded my house as big as it can go, as far as I know. I love having a living room plus five extra rooms but this game has so many cool furniture pieces that I have a mighty need for never-ending space to fill with it all.

I also wish that tools did not break so easily. I understand that the game needs to have features that make players work for things and complete tasks to obtain the items they require, however I still feel that there should be another feature to counterbalance this. I would love an option to bulk carry tools in my inventory, such as you can do with fruit. That way, I could always be carrying a fair amount of tools in case the one I'm using should break, but still allowing me to carry all of the goodies that I find whilst exploring.  I hate being all the way on the other side of the island and having to run back home to get another tool, however this is just a little annoyance of mine and I'm likely complaining too much :D we all have our things...

BUT I assume that everyone finds the wasps and tarantulas to be a pain!! The wasps, I can deal with. I have gotten used to them, and can mostly catch them before they get a chance to sting my islander. The tarantulas, on the other hand, always pop out of nowhere and its a little frustrating to say the least. I have managed to catch several now and they are very awesome-looking. My islander even has a 'pet' one in her home, but still! I don't know if that makes up for it... what do you think? The only other minor irk that I have with AC:NH is that when you visit your animal friends at their house and they happen to be crafting something, it's more often than not, for me, is an item that I already know how to make. Of course, when I start using Nintendo Online and visiting my friends/they visit me, I can leave these recipe cards about for them to collect. Right now though, I just have a stockpile and it's a little annoying. I know that they need to slowly give players all of the recipes but I'm impatient by nature. Help :D

A photograph of a coral-coloured nintendo switch console and two amiibo cards of a goat character and a frog character

So, those were my thoughts and feelings and opinions about Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I hope I didn't bore you all and that if you were on the fence about investing in your copy of the game, that I have persuaded you because it really is a lovely thing to pass the time, especially during lockdown. I find it so relaxing, and I can play for hours without getting bored, but that's because I love games like Animal Crossing, where you can just totter around, pretending, that instead of living in this mess of a world, you live on an pretty island with the sweetest animal buddies, and spend your days and nights picking fruit, planting trees and flowers, buying cute outfits, growing things and just have the perfect cottagecore-esque time! So, if that sounds like paradise to you, you need to get this game in your life!!

After discussing the game, I am now desperate to go back to playing it and so I will finish up my post here :) By the way, if you did not already know, today is the Spring Equinox, so the official first day of the new season has sprung, and I am so ready for it :) Wishing you all a lovely Springtime!!

Thankyou for reading!

Do you have any recommendations for games similar to AC:NH? I'd love to check them out!

Also, tell me if you have any dislikes when it comes to this game. What changes would you make?

My Favourite Video Games As A Kid

Hello Everyone! Today has been a slow albeit lovely day in the end for me :) I don't know if you guys care/are fellow nature lovers, but I had my first ever encounter with a Silver Y (Autographa gamma) moth, a daytime species that I've always wanted to see! It visited my buddleia bush, with its last remaining blossom, and even landed on my hands!! It made my day, if not my entire summer! I might sound like a dork for getting all excited over a moth, but... well, my long-term readers will know by now that I am one :D Anyway, what was the highlight of your day?

Did you know that it's National Video Game Day? So in celebration, I thought why not do a themed post? I recently stumbled upon a load of my old PlayStation games and so I decided today's post would be dedicated to my favourite games as a kid. Enjoy!

I was always a PlayStation kid. It was my very first console and as such, it holds a special place in my heart. I must have been around seven or eight years old, when Santa Claus delivered me a PS1 for Christmas; it was one of the tiny models, if anyone remembers those? Along with my uncle's old TV. Gosh, that thing had seen better days (an understatement)! I actually had to bang it sometimes to get the screen to stop filling up with black lines- oh growing up 'poor' in the 90's- what fun times! But much appreciated nonetheless, as I felt so grown up having my own TV and console in my bedroom and had to pretty much be pried off it at bedtime, haha! My love for PlayStation has stuck with me, and after owning an Xbox 360 in college, I very much decided PlayStation's were the better consoles- sorry not sorry, Xbox fans! I'd love to hear which of the two you all prefer :)

But, what were my favourite games?

A photo showing a collection of playstation games, both discs and cased games, plus a Crash Bandicoot figure and Sonic the Hedgehog one

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil

Whenever I mention this wonderful game, no-one seems to have played it! Have you?? It was so good! I first met little Klonoa, the Dream Traveller who looks like a lop-eared bunny, on a demo. It featured the original 1997 game- Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, and I just fell in love with it! I grew up playing a lot of games in their demo versions, as my parents couldn't afford to buy me new games all the time. As an adult, I understand that and I am so thankful they saved up to get me my PS1 and PS2 consoles, however for little me, it sucked that I never got to play past the first few levels of games! I pestered my mom for the full Klonoa game so often, and being the most amazing mom that she was, she searched for it everywhere she could but didn't manage to get it. What she did come across though was the sequel for PlayStation 2, and thus, when I was around 10 I was reunited with Klonoa and his fantastical adventures!

I have been a fan of Japanese animation for as long as I can remember. I've always been drawn to it, so it's no wonder that as soon as I set eyes on Klonoa, I adored it! It was produced/created by Namco and the sequel was released by Sony throughout Europe and the US in 2001. The graphics, the storyline, the gameplay, the soundtrack- everything, is so beautiful! I am so glad that I still have my original copy :)

Tomba!

Again, as a child, I only ever played the demo version of this 1998 game. It was first released in Japan by Whoopee Camp (another Japanese game, of course!) and then a year later by Sony. In the game, you play as a caveman-esque little boy with spiky pink hair. I was immediately wowed by this feature as it reminded me of the iconic Saiyan hairstyle from Dragon Ball Z, my one true love at that time in my life :D Tomba is on a mission to find a precious bracelet that is stolen from his grandfather by the antagonists of the story, the 'Evil Koma Pigs'. Tomba must venture through a world that has been taken over by these pigs, who have used their powers to destroy the land, wreck havoc and set obstacles in the way of the hero's journey!

I loved the mix of prehistoric scenes and creatures from Tomba's homeland, and the fantasy-based elements of the rest of the quest. There's also these adorable little leaf butterflies in the game that I wished were real, AND a puppy you've got to rescue!! What's not to love!? I didn't get to play this game properly until I was at university, when my flatmate let me buy it on his PS3 and oh my god, it was a delight to relive the nostalgia and then some! I'm hoping to come across the game for a reasonable price some day.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

This is one of the first games I remember asking for as a Christmas present. I played it a little at a friend's house when I was eight and I had to have it. I'm not gonna lie, it was the medieval level and the frogs that sold me... I mean, huge frogs though!? And I've forever been a history-obsessed human, so I was over the moon with this element of the game! Crash Bandicoot is one of those classics that is so well-known that I don't really need to describe it, but just in case... Crash is a bandicoot, obviously, that escaped from an evil doctors laboratory after an disastrous experiment and then fights, along with his friends, to stop Dr Neo Cortex from taking over the world. In Crash Bandicoot 3, the Dr teams up with Uka Uka, a vengeful spirit, to hunt for some magical crystals that are hidden throughout time and space. Crash must stop them from completing their evil mission. It's seriously such an engaging game, full of action and the different levels are so creative. Everyone should play at least one of the Crash Bandicoot's in their lifetime! Who has a favourite in the series? I loved Wrath of Cortex for PS2, as well.

A photo showing a playstation 2 consule, a game called Sonic Heroes, a figure of Sonic who is a blue hedgehog character by Sega and a dotty background

Sonic Heroes

Twelve year old me was very eager to get her hands on this game. I grew up listening to one of my brothers always going on about Sonic the Hedgehog, which he was a big fan as a kid in the 80's. I had already decided Knuckles the echidna was the best character years before I ever played a Sonic game! And he still is to this day :) Anyone who's ever played Sonic Heroes will know much of an awesome game it was. That theme song is catchy af! (And now it's going to be in my head for days, oops!).

Sonic and his buddies aim to defeat Doctor Eggman as always; this time, by collecting the 'chaos emeralds' before he does. I don't know what else to say about this Sega game, other than it was heaps of fun to play, very action-packed, and the storyline was great. I know there's a lot of people that didn't rate the game, but I love it, so yeah :D

Puchi Carat

Okay, so this might seem like a very random choice to my gamer readers, because there were so many other brilliant games in the 90's and early 2000's, but I fell in love with this game for the characters and storyline alone. It is a Japanese arcade game produced by Taito in '97, and was one that my mom found whilst out shopping and surprised me with  Those graphics are just wonderful... so much detail has been put into a very simplistic arcade game! I was a fan of anime from around six years old, so I couldn't not adore the characters of this game. I had just started to have an interest in crystals and birthstones, things surrounding magic and the like, and the characters were based after just that! There's one for every month, designed to represent that birthstone. To this day, I have memorised those gems thanks to Puchi Carat!

Paz, the villain of the game, the character for November's birthstone Topaz, made me think of Kagato, the bad guy in the anime series, Tenchi Muyo! Another thing that I was obsessed with at that age :) I even named my pet Mongolian Gerbils, Ryoko and Sapphire, after my favourite Tenchi Muyo! character and my childhood best friend's favourite character from my Puchi Carat game. Once a nerd, always a nerd, right?

Anyway, the quest of the game is to try and help the characters collect the 12 gems, so they can have their wishes granted or something like that. You battle against other characters via the arcade game, which is a basic retro classic that I can't remember the original name of now. Nevermind! Its a game that is weirdly relaxing to play even though it gets more challenging as the game progresses. It certainly helps with concentration skills! This is a long shot, but did any of you guys ever play this game?

Well, those were my all-time favourite games when I was growing up, but here's a few honourable mentions. Disney's Tarzan was up there, and was so close to making the list! The movie is one of my favourites, and through the gameplay, you unlock little video clips from it. You get to listen to the gorgeous soundtrack by Phil Collins, and it's just excellent to be able to pretend you are living in the jungle and swinging from vine-to-vine. Not so much running from those terrifying baboons! Some of my go-to games when I wanted to wind down or when I was having a particularly unmotivated day, were Tony Hawk's Pro Skater & Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (which had an ace selection of music on their car radio channels!). I couldn't end this post without also including Rayman, which is a marvellous game, and Spyro, which I unfortunately only ever had demos of. Regardless, I thought that little dragon was so cute, more so Sparx the dragonfly :), and I enjoyed harassing those frog characters, haha!  I better stop typing now or we'll be here all night!

Thankyou for reading!

What were your favourite games when you were a kid?

Did you grow up on demos like I did?

Why I Will Forever Love Sims 2

Hello lovelies! What have you been up to today? I'd love to hear all about it in the comments :) My day has literally been filled with sleeping and watching crime documentaries! One of the things that sucks the most about having fibromyalgia is how one day out can impact my energy levels and how much pain I'm in for the days following. Yesterday I had a busy day; I went out geocaching and I had an awesome time. However I paid for it today, waking up feeling like I'd put my body through an intense workout! Regardless, it was still really nice to get out in nature, to hear stones and twigs crunching under my shoes, to hear squirrels foraging through the leaf-litter and birds tweeting, to feel the cool breeze and warm sunshine on my face. I found two caches, spotted lots of butterflies (also took part in my first #BigButterflyCount of the year!), and picked wild raspberries, which were delicious by the way. My legs and feet may have ached afterwards, but it was a good way to spend a midsummer afternoon!

Anyhow, on with today's post! Which has been inspired by the fact that I can't stop playing Sims lately! Usually, and I'm sure it's probably the same for 90% of us Sims players, I go through momentary phrases of really wanting to play the game, binge-gaming for a few days, and then my game doesn't get touched again for months and months! XD So different to when I first discovered Sims as an 12 year old and was obsessed with it! Especially when it came to making a Sim version of myself and my celeb crush, and investing hours after school ensuring we were married, had a dream house and lots of kids! Don't lie, you know you did this too!

However, I have been randomly reignited with a love for playing Sims, not as much as back in my teens, but I've still been playing it a heck of a lot! So, I thought why not blog about what's kept me going back to this game for last 10+ years (gosh, I feel old now haha!) and why it is that I still play the 2004 edition of this game, when there's now a 3rd & 4th version! I hope you all enjoy reading, and that you can relate! I'm sure I'm not alone in my love of The Sims :)

Sims 2- Why I Will Forever Love Playing it

5 Reasons why I just love playing Sims 2 so much!

(1) I just really enjoy playing RPG's (or role-playing games), they are my favourite type of game. The Sims was one of the first ever games of this kind that I played, and it's been a part of my life for longer now than it has not. I first discovered Sims 2 when a friend of mine got the game and we would play it together whenever I hung out at her house. This was around the time when I also got my first computer when my brother gave me and my sister one of his old computers (he used to love taking apart, building and modifying computers when he was a teenager!), and so I asked my mom to get me the Sims 2 game for Christmas that year. Back then, PC games were in CD Rom form and I had to use four separate disks to install the game :D At least by this point, we were no longer restricted to just using floppy disks :D Who remembers those things!?

(2) Something that really appealed to me about Sims 2 in my early teens was how much of an escape it was, that you could just live out (as much as Sims allows) a different life for a while, if that even makes sense. You could create people to look however you wanted, to do whatever job you wanted or to live out their lives however you wanted them to. At that age especially, it was nice to be able to design a Sim to symbolise yourself 'in the future', to create yourself how you wanted to be when you were grown up. Who else used to do this? It was cool to make your sims whoever you wanted them to be! I still enjoy this now, although it's much more in a nostalgic sense, than to create a reimagined digital version of myself :D

(3) I love the creative freedom that Sims 2 offers! You can do whatever you feel like with your characters. Want an alien baby? Sure! Wanna spontaneously set fire to your kitchen? Do it! Fancy having a vampire-next-door in your neighbour? Just get your Sim bitten by one! The possibilities are pretty endless!

Although Sims 2 is pretty outdated compared to what you can do on RPG games nowadays, I really like the simplicity of it. This point relates to my previous one about making your Sims be however you want them to be, but for different reasons. It's just fun to create people and imagine up storylines in your head for how you want their lives to play out. Playing Sims as an adult has just made this aspect more enjoyable for me, because I now literally come up with all of these intricate backstories in my mind for the characters that I am creating. It's like I'm bringing the words of an unwritten novel of mine to life! Sometimes I even have to jot down all of the Sims that I'm creating and how they are going to interact with one another so that I can remember all of the complicated ideas that I had when I first decided to make them XD I feel like such a dork telling you guys that, haha.

(4) I am someone who has always hated any kind of conflict, I prefer to avoid confrontation as much as I can because it makes me so anxious. When I was growing up, I would never stand up for myself, or get involved in any sort of debates or drama. There were plenty of times when I wish I could have had the nerve to say something, to voice my opinion and to argue back whenever someone was walking all over me or acting like a jerk to me or one of my friends. I always had a lot to say but would just keep it in. I'm a lot better as an adult, but I still make a point to not get involved in drama, even if I really want to say something.

This brings me to another reason why I feel I enjoy Sims. I like that you can create all sorts of drama when it comes to your characters lives, you can make them go through all of the challenges that you see on TV dramas and you get to decide what happens. It's fun to be in control of that! The Sims 2 helps to satisfy my inner bitch so to speak! :D Everyone loves a good drama, with lots of shock factor moments and The Sims lets you cause that, from affairs to forbidden love to suspicious deaths... you can express your internal sadist? , the little devil on your shoulder can be in charge for once, as though you are George RR Martin killing off all of the characters we love in Game of Thrones/ A Song of Ice and Fire T_T

(5) Playing Sims 2 makes me feel like a builder, an architect and an interior designer all at once! I can just spend hours making a dream house for my Sims! It's really fun to keep coming up with different designs so that no two houses are the same on my game. Sometimes I honestly just go on my game, spend ages making a house and decorating/furnishing it, and then turn my game off again, without ever playing out the characters lives at all! Let me know if you do this too :D

Sims 2- Why I Will Forever Love Playing it

Why am I still playing this version of The Sims after all these years!?

Something that I really like about Sims 2 is the design of the characters themselves. I love that the people that you can create look cartoon-esque, they remind me in some ways of an anime style character. As EA Games released newer models of The Sims games, the characters started to look more and more realistic, with their features resembling real human characteristics more and more, and there's just something about these characters that I don't like. I can't speak for Sims 4 because I've never played it, but I played Sims 3 once and I really didn't like how the characters looked. I don't know why I prefer the older character graphics, because I love the design quality of characters on the RPG's we have now so much, but maybe it's because I'm a 'creature of habit' and I'm so used to Sims looking this way that I can't imagine them any other way.

Another thing that I like about Sims 2 is that you can recreate a whole town, giving it whatever name you want and setting everything out however you like. I usually save all of the houses that I like from the three towns that are already on the game, and then delete them, creating a new town of my own. I'm not sure whether this is something that's only possible on Sims 2, but I like that this game gives you the ability to do it.

I've already mentioned house making in this post but I feel like it deserves a place in this section as well :) From what I've heard about the newer Sims games is that they aren't as good as the Sims 2 when it comes designing your own house from scratch, and that they focus more on the Sims characters themselves and their lives/jobs. This is honestly now my favourite aspect of playing the game and so if I wasn't able to do this, I think I'd get bored of the game easily. The novelty of being able to design your own characters and control to an extent how your characters lives pan out has mostly gone because of the advances we've seen in RPG's over the years, but something that I feel is unique to Sims 2 alone (and maybe the others Sims games but I don't know about those) is how you can create a home with all of the different design options. I just love it so much!

The final point that I want to include about why I'm still playing the Sims 2 after all this time is because it's such an easy game to play. It doesn't require you to concentrate much, you don't have to follow any on-screen instructions or complete any timed quests to move onto another level, etc. Sure, your Sims have aspiration goals that you can complete to make them successful and happy virtual people, but this is all optional, you don't need to do them, you can do whatever you want on the game. If you get bored with something, you can change it and you can delete your characters whenever you want and start again.

A bonus reason why I love Sims 2 are the cheats that you are able to use, which makes completing your characters aspirations even easier! There's a cheat that gives you £50,000 everytime you type it in, and another that makes all of the creator's testing cheats available, so that you can do all sorts within the game with not much effort at all. Being a spoonie means that there are times when I am too tired to do or think much, I cannot concentrate or I have little motivation, but Sims 2 is something that I can do most of the time because it doesn't require me to pay much attention or use much energy. Whenever I'm bored, I will always consider playing Sims, and it's something that I don't need internet connection for, which is great when my wifi is playing up or whatever :)

So, those are some of the reasons why I love playing Sims 2 so much and why I can't see myself stopping anytime soon. I can imagine myself still going back to this game every now and again for the next 10+ plus years! It's just one of those classics that I can't help but love to play, just like all of the PlayStation 1 games I adored as a kid. They will always hold a place in my heart, and be memorable to me for all of the times they helped me distract myself from the things I struggled with when I was a teenager (Thanks EA Games!). I am going to enjoy my current passion for playing Sims 2 whilst it lasts, before I put the game on my shelf and ignore it for another year, haha! I hope you all enjoyed today's post :)

Thankyou for reading!
