Dealing with Anxiety at Comic Con

Before I went to my first Comic Con expo, I was terrified. The thought of being in a building absolutely rammed with people was not my idea of fun. I have anxiety disorder. Places filled with people I don't know make my anxiety sky high, the thought of not being able to escape the building quickly if I needed to, the idea of all the sensory overload I'd get from a room full of echoing voices. So much panic circulated my mind whenever I pictured going to Comic Con. The trouble is that in the weeks following the event, I would see photos and videos of people having an awesome time, of the most amazing cosplay, or of all of the nerdy goodies everyone had brought home with them, and I would feel the craws of depression sinking in. I was envious of those people; I was angry at myself because of my anxiety. I  wanted nothing more than to join my fellow nerds at Comic Con and it broke my heart that I was being held back, that I was missng out on this wonderful experience.

So I decided that I was going to do it! I was going to go to a Comic Con expo in the summer after graduating from university. On an impulse, I purchased tickets for my best friend & I, so I couldn't change my mind. I was determined that I was going to take this leap and do something I'd always wanted to do! Whenever I would get anxious thoughts, when I would start to panic and want to back out, I would tell myself that I can just go back home if I didn't like it. So I went to the local MCM Comic Con event on Saturday 25th July 2015 and I had a fantastic time, despite my anxiety. It was a great learning experience of how I can cope with stressful situations if I am really focused on getting through it. I was able to experience what Comic Con was like, which meant I could avoid things I didn't feel comfortable with at this years event. I've decided today to share with you all some tips for dealing with anxiety at expos, as I would have appreciated being able to read something like this before I went to my first con. I hope that these tips are helpful to others who have been too anxious to go. Enjoy!

Dealing with Anxiety at Comic Con, Coping with Anxiety at Comic Con, Anxiety at Comic Con,

Here are my tips for dealing with anxiety at conventions:

(1) Go with a close friend or family member

I'm someone who doesnt feel comfortable going anywhere without being accompanied by a friend or family member, but when it comes to an event like Comic Con, I always got with my best friend. It's important that when you go somewhere that can be really anxiety-provoking, that you go with someone you trust, someone you feel comfortable expressing how you feel to, someone who you know will be supportive and encouraging, as they know you struggle with anxiety. It's great to have someone with you to distract you, to help you not spend the day in a state of constant panic.

(2) Take breaks

It can be really overwhelming to deal with Comic Con so make sure you get outside or to a quiet area to relax, calm down or rationalise your thoughts. Don't worry about missing something. You are there, you're having a great time and if you feel like you've missed out on something, you can always go again.

(3) Think about getting a hotel room nearby

I haven't yet done this, but I definitely think that it would relieve a lot of my anxiety if I had a room that I could go back to if everything is getting too much. If I was feeling overwhelmed or like I was going to have an anxiety attack, I wouldn't need to worry about being surrounded by lots of people that I don't know. Having a hotel room would also mean you didn't have to use public transport after the convention, and deal with the massive crowds of people flocking to the train station or bus stops afterwards.

(4) Utilise the quieter areas

There are areas in Comic Con events with less people or corners away from the crowds, go and sit there to eat or to get away from sensory overload for a while. At Manchester Comic Con, I go and sit on the floor either in the area where the food vans are or in the other room seperate from where all of the stalls are. Me and my best friend will try to do this every 30 minutes- to an hour as it helps with both my anxiety and my fibromyalgia, because shopping can get really tiring. Remember that if there's no quiet areas, there's always the toilets. You can sit in a stall and do some breathing exercises to help clear your mind before heading back into the events hall.

(5) Remember to look after yourself

Comic Con's are busy, you will be on your feet for a long time, wandering around all of the stalls and checking out everyone's cosplay. Make sure you get enough sleep the night before you go, otherwise you will feel really exhausted and won't have as great of an experience. You are likely to be both mentally and physically drained if you are dealing with anxiety, and even more so if you also have other health conditions, so make sure to take rest stops throughout the day. Make sure you carry a drink with you or bring enough money to buy some (the food and drinks at conventions are pretty pricey! I paid £2.50 for a bottle of coke), and also remember to eat something.

Dealing with Anxiety at Comic Con, Coping with Anxiety at Comic Con, Anxiety at Comic Con,

(6) Explore first

When you first go into the convention, before you start shopping, walk around the building just to see where all of the exits are, where the toilets and the quiet areas are. This will help to reduce any panic you may have later in the day as you'll know how to 'escape' when you need to. You may be able to see a plan of the building online so if you prefer, so have a search around for that before your day out. I felt much more at ease this year now that I knew what to expect as soon as I got inside the event. I knew where to go and I could quickly get there if I needed to without having to panic as I looked for signs or doorways.

(7) Dress up as one of your favourite characters!

One of the most enjoyable things about Comic Con is the cosplay! It truely is so much fun to check out everyone's costumes of their favourite anime, comic book, movie, book or cartoon characters. The atmosphere is great, because everyone feels awesome in their cosplay. Some people put a massive amount of time and effort into their cosplay and it's epic. Although I'm definitely an amatuer when it comes to cosplay, I still love dressing up. I feel that when I'm wearing the cosplay, I feel less anxious because I am surrounded by people also dressed up and I feel in my element, at ease knowing that I'm surrounded by fellow nerds all there to have a wonderful time.  It's also easy to get into character when you are cosplaying, to almost not feel like yourself. That may sound weird, but I felt like an adorable Totoro this year not introvented, anxious little me haha. Do keep in mind that people may ask you if they can take a photo of your cosplay or talk to you because you're dressed as one of their most loved characters!

(8) Use grounding techniques

Grounding is a method/technique used to help people with mental illnesses stay focused and remain present, rather than going into a detached or dissociative state in order to cope with stressful situations or surroundings. Grounding can be really helpful when your anxiety is high or you feel a panic/anxiety attack coming on. There are lots of methods you can find online but one of my personal favourites is one in which you concentrate on your five senses. If you feel yourself getting more and more anxious, look around you and follow these points:

Find five things that you can see
Four things you can touch (it helps me to imagine the texture, to think about what the items would feel like, or to actually touch things. I roll the fabric of my clothes between my fingers, stroke my eyebrow, things like that. It may sound silly but it works for me!).
Three things you can hear (I listen to peoples conversations around me, I hum to myself, I listen to my deep breaths).
Two things you can smell (this can be hard, but I smell any perfume I'm wearing, etc.).
and, one thing you can taste.

If you try this grounding technique and it helps you too, please let me know :)

(9) Use an Anxiety App

This is a tip that I haven't personally tried, however I know many people have an app on their phone that is really beneficial for their anxiety. It may be worth finding one that's right for you before you go to Comic Con. Many of these apps will have game-like features on to help you focus your thoughts on something other than the many anxious thoughts filling your head. Other apps will also have calming sounds so you can pop your headphones in and listen to something other than the loud voices in the events hall whilst you calm down, as well as breathing exercises that are interactive. I'm definitely thinking about downloading an app for next year.

All of these tips help me get through a day at Comic Con and I am so grateful that I now have these coping mechanisms so that I can do something that I really enjoy with minimal amounts of anxiety. It's still a struggle but not as challenging as it would be if I didn't have these methods to put me at ease. I look forward to this event every year and I can't wait to go again. I hope that my tips have been useful for others; they can be used to help you get through other events too that are similar such as fashion shows, art shows and craft fairs. I know it's easier said than done, and I too have put things off for years because of anxiety, but try not to let your mental health hold you back from doing the things you want to do!

Thankyou for reading!

So much Cuteness! Caticorn Phone Case

Happy Friday! I hope you've all had a wonderful week. I'm glad that the week is over to be honest; it's not been the most exciting or stress-free week for me as you'll know if you follow me on snapchat (you can find me over at raiin_monkey). I'm determinded to make next week more productive and to get back to focusing on self care, something that I have been seriously neglecting lately. I always start the week with the idea that I'm going to make this week the week in which I finally start looking after myself more, but depression always gets in the way and my motivation goes out of the window. It's frustrating!

This is something that's been on my mind a lot today and as a consequence, my mood has not been the best. So, in an attempt to try and cheer myself up, I've decided to blog about a too-cute-to-resist purchase I made at the end of July. When this adorable phone case popped up in my Etsy recommendations, I just couldn't say no. I hope you enjoy reading!

Caticorn Phone Case, Caticorn, Unicorn Cat, Cat Unicorn, Kawaii,

How flippin' cute are these caticorns!!? oh my gosh, I just love them! They have the sweetest faces, chubby bodies that make me wish they were real so I could hug them, a rainbow unicorn horn, mane and tail in pretty pastel colours, and I love their little kawaii expressions! I'm so happy with this purchase, even though I'm not yet ready to remove my chibli pokemon phone case (see here), I couldn't resist buying this to use in the future!

Caticorn Phone Case, Caticorn, Unicorn Cat, Cat Unicorn, Kawaii,

I bought this gorgeous phone case from RockSteadyCases, an Etsy store based in the UK. Altogether it was around £12 for the case plus shipping, which I thought was great and they even included a little screen wipe and protector in with my phone case. I'll definitely check them out again when I'm after another new case.

Caticorn Phone Case, Caticorn, Unicorn Cat, Cat Unicorn, Kawaii,

I don't usually go for white cases but I think it looks lovely with the caticorn print and all of the little coloured stars so it was definitely worth it. My life feels complete now that I have cat unicorns and cat mermaids (thanks to Paperchase's new Purrmaids collection) around me! I apologise to anyone who now cannot stop themselves buying this phone case haha :)

Thankyou for reading!

Which do you prefer: caticorns or purrmaids? unicorns or mermaids?
Also, tell me all about the best phone case you've ever purchased?

Love to read about what others have been buying lately, check out these posts:

July Papergang | Review

Hey everyone! As if it's now August already! I can't believe how quickly this year has gone and that next month it will be a year since I started blogging! Wow :) I hope that you have all enjoyed reading Raiin Monkey. Thankyou to everyone that has read my posts, left me lovely comments, followed me on social media, and just supported me and become my friends. You are all awesome and have made my blogging experience great so far. I just wanted to let you all know how much your interaction with me and my blog means to me ♥ Today's post is another Papergang Box review. I hope you all enjoy reading!

The Papergang Box, Papergang, Papergang July, July Papergang Box,

I really liked the pink and purple pattern on the front of the July Papergang Box, but what was immediately different was the size of the box. I wasn't sure at first if it was because the items inside were smaller this month or whether Papergang have redesigned the size of their box. I'm hoping it's the latter as then the boxes will be able to fit through the letterbox and be easier to store away. So here's what was inside...

The Papergang, The Papergang Box, Papergang, July Papergang,

The July Papergang Box contains six individual items and a pack of three notebooks. The individual items include a Screen Printed Wooden Clipboard, a pencil, a Riso Printed Calendar and three greetings cards. The notebook set contains three A6 notebooks, all with a different cover design. Although there are some lovely items inside this box, I was a little disappointed about the variety of items I got to be honest.

These two items are my least favourite in the July Papergang Box. I do like that the design on the front of the box matches with the one on the little wooden clipboard, however I do not like the clipboard itself. It's very thin and rough, and feels pretty cheap as a result even though the RRP of the item is £6. The metal part at the top that you use to secure your paper is also very hard to use as it's really stiff and actually hurt my hands and wrists to lift up. This may be because I have painful hands and wrists anyway due to fibromyalgia but that's another reason why I didn't like the clipboard.

The next item is the Riso Printed Calendar; it's simply a piece of card with a calendar printed on, which has a retail value of £1.95. I personally am not really a fan of the design or have any uses for it, however it could be nice to stick into a bullet journal or a planner, or even use a magnet to attach it to the front of the fridge so you can circle your appointment days on it or whatever dates you need to highlight.

The Papergang, The Papergang Box, Papergang Box, Papergang Box July,

I do like these small (A6) notebooks. They are cute and can fit easily into a bag to take out and about with me. I like how you get three different designs too; my favourite is the grey one with gold lettering. Another thing that I like about the notebooks is that the paper inside is blank so I can use them to doodle or to quickly jot notes down. I'm quite tempted to start a little art journal/sketch book as I used to enjoy drawing and I'm more likely to do it when I'm out, relaxing somewhere with my friends or sat in a cafe. You get three notebooks for an RRP of £5.95 which I think is a good price.

Papergang Box, The Papergang, July Papergang, Papergang Box July,

The pencil is another item that I'm not really keen on, as it feels like a filler item but I guess you can never have too many pencils. At least I now have a few pencils to start drawing with in my new notebooks. I do think the gold lettering on the side of the pencil, reading 'On Point' is pretty cute.

This 'Pugtato' greeting card is actually my favourite item from the entire box. Even though I'm not a huge lover of Pugs like everyone else seems to be, how can anyone not instantly fall in love with this adorable chubby potato-pug!? It's so random and super adorable. I want a pet pugtato! I think this will be another card that I never get around to using because I don't want to part with it. I might use it in a scrapbook or even frame it. It would also make a fantastic addition to office wall art. There's just something about square cards that I really love, I don't know what it is but I prefer them so much more to standard cards.

July Papergang Box, The Papergang Box, The Papergang, Papergang Box July,

The final items in the Papergang Box are these lovely greetings card. I love the tiger card, it's absolutely gorgeous and I really like the realistic and well-detailed design of the tiger. It's eyes are so piercing and beautiful. I have a few friends who are mad on tigers so they may just be getting this little cutie through their letterbox on their birthday. The other card is quite comical as it reads 'Good Luck. You're going to need it' and I think it would be great to make someone smile before an exam or an interview. Although not if they are as anxious as I am, because this card would make me panic a little! I also like the shade of blue they've used as it's one of my favourite colours. Something that I do love about the cards from Oh Deer (who make The Papergang Box) is that they are quirky and unique, usually with brown envelopes, I love them! They are normally blank inside too which I prefer. I like to be able to write whatever I like and decorate the inside of the card with stickers and little doodles.

The Papergang Box, The Papergang, July Papergang Box, July Papergang,

Here is the design on the back of the Papergang sleeve featuring the usual origami style cut-out animal. The July Box has a Ram to create, which is rather random compared to the items in the box this time but oh well, it's still an addition to the design of the packaging that I will forever be a fan of. Overall, in my honest opinion, I wasn't thrilled with what I received in the July Box. There are some items that are both pretty and useful, but I did get quite a few items that I don't personally like.

Thankyou for reading!

What do you think of this box? What's your favourite item?
If you are a subscriptor of the box, what was your opinion of this month VS the other boxes?

Manchester Comic Con 2016 | Photo Diary

If you follow me on social media, you might have seen that on Saturday I went to the Manchester MCM Comic Con. I absolutely love going to Comic Con, it's such an awesome day out for a nerd like me :) I love seeing all of the cosplay that everyone has put so much effort and passion into making and spending an afternoon shopping at all of the stalls which perfectly cater for my fellow kawaii lovers, plus gamers, anime and manga fans, and those who appreciate fantasy and art. I always go crazy with my camera at Comic Con so I thought I'd share some of the photos I took with you all. Enjoy!

Manchester Comic Con, MCM Comic Con, Manchester Comic Con Photos,

For those of my readers who might not have heard of Comic Cons, they are big events which were originally known as Comic Book Conventions where fans of comics could meet up to share their love of their favourite stories, artists and characters, and have a chance of meeting their most loved illustrators and writers. Some people would also dress up as their best characters to show their love for them. Over time, as the 'nerd' culture grew and people became interested in a massive array of things, these conventions developed and featured all sorts of hobbies and interests. We now have Comic Con events that accomodate for so many geeky niches, and they bring people together which I think is awesome. So, here are some photographs of Manchester's event:

I fell in love with this adorable little cat character as soon as I saw it, meaning I couldn't not buy one of these pin badges for my collection. How could I say no when the card says 'Take Me Home Please'!? So cute :)

My best friend made me giggle when she spotted this Wobbuffet and immediately picked it up to show me. Basically, I am constantly imitating Pokemon because I'm a dork haha, and well Wobbuffet is one of my favourite Pokemon sounds to make. Me & Jess like to remind each other how weird we both are! I seriously regret not buying this little guy now.

I managed to take a sneaky photograph of Andrew-Lee Potts, who you may recognise from the TV series, Primeval. I am way too shy to go up to famous people unless they are like my all time favourite celebrities so I was attempting to get some pics of him without being noticed :) I only managed to get one good shot though because a lovely girl dressed as anime star, Hatsune Miku, asked if she could take a photograph of my cosplay. I dressed as Totoro (from the Studio Ghibli movie 'My Neighbour Totoro) and well everyone loves Totoro!

How pretty are the My Little Pony figures above!? Seeing them was so nostalgic as I had these figures when I was really young. I remember that I used to chew their legs! haha seriously though, those figures are so gorgeous, really colourful and sparkley.

One of the things I love most about going to Comic Con is all of the kawaii stalls! Tofu Cute is probably my favourite UK Japanese and East Asian supplier; be sure to go and check out their website if you love Japanese snacks, kawaii and they are also the official UK supplier of Amuse plushies. Check out my own Amuse collection here. I get so excited about visiting their shop at Comic Con! Another kawaii shop that I was really looking forward to visiting was the LoveJoJo stall, which is another UK Japanese supplier who also offer a monthly subscription box that I've been curious about trying for a while now. When I spotted LoveJoJo's instagram photos of their stall, I was so giddy! I was certainly not disappointed when I saw it in person.

The final photo I've decided to include is of a creepy af teddy bear that I spotted on the stall of an independent artist. As a massive fan of horror, I thought it was awesome, although others may not agree :) It immediately made me think of the 2002 movie 'Cabin Fever' which was full of some lovely skin peeling off gore!

Thankyou for reading!

Have you even been to Comic Con? What did you think of it?
If not, do you want to go? What would you cosplay as?
